MDX-20 Scanning - Milling Machine

Turn Concepts into Reality

The ever increasing demand for high quality product design places real pressure on designers to visualise their concepts quickly, accurately and above all cost-effectively.

The Roland range of digital workbench tools and 3D scanning technology enable a wide range of materials to be modelled and a concept to be proven in a material before committing to a full production version. By inexpensively turning concepts into three-dimensional prototypes our range enables multiple concept iterations to be modelled quickly and in a variety of materials.

By keeping the process in-house you are able to produce tangible prototypes to test ergonomics, fit, form, function and pattern-making, with the obvious benefits of eliminating costly outsourcing and maintaining the security of proprietary concepts - all of which makes perfect business sense.

PrototypesRapid Prototyping Made Easy

Many product designers and engineers who are researching additive RP systems as a way to test form, fit and function of their prototypes may be unaware that there is a better, cheaper, faster solution. Roland subtractive RP systems (SRP™) produce form models faster than any 3D printer on the market and easier than any other CNC mill on the market. That’s because Roland offers a complete software/hardware solution that combines the ease of use of 3D printers with the benefits of CNC-machined parts.

MDX-40A and MDX-540 series milling machines cost significantly less than 3D printers while producing precision prototypes out of a wider variety of non-proprietary materials. A larger selection of materials makes it easier to create prototypes, including UV resistance, bending strength, surface hardness and electrical conductivity. This is particularly important for biomedical and food processing products, where biocompatibility and chemically inert properties are critical. Roland SRP solutions come with SRP Player, powerful, easy to use CAM software that delivers the speed, tight tolerances and exceptionally smooth surface finishes required for prototyping and customised rapid manufacturing applications.

PrototypesFunctional Prototypes

Mill functional prototypes using a wide range of materials that additive systems do not support. Users can choose from popular engineered plastics such as ABS, Acetal and Nylon, as well as acrylic and polycarbonate for transparent parts and a variety of woods and metals including aluminium, brass and copper. Compared to additive RP systems, Roland desktop devices produce functional prototypes that are better for structural, thermal and electrical testing.

    Feature Summary

    • Easy, unattended scanning and milling
    • Roland Active Piezo Sensor scanning technology
    • CAD and Scanning Software included
    • Powerful CNC mill handles light metals, including aluminum and brass
    • Maximum scanning Resolution: 0.05 (0.002 inches
    • MDX-20 Maximum work area: 203.2 (X) x 152.4 (Y) x 60.5 (Z) mm [8 (X) x 6 (Y) x 2-3/8 (Z) in.]
    • All In One Machine

The Roland Active Piezo Sensor (RAPS) transforms the machine into a 3D scanner for scanning 3D objects and creating 3D data. The milling spindle unit turns the machine into a full-featured CNC (computer numerical control) mill capable of cutting jeweller's wax, resins, chemical wood, acrylic, and even light metals such as brass and aluminum

    • Subtractive RP

SRPSubtractive Rapid Prototyping (SRP) - starting with a solid object and removing unwanted material - has several advantages over traditional rapid prototyping. Significantly less expensive than rapid prototyping machines with the same resolution, SRP machines mill a wider range of materials that cost less and have no need for chemicals or post finishing work. Plus, they produce a superior finish.

    • R.A.P.S.

Roland Active Piezo Sensor (RAPS) technology eliminates the drawbacks of conventional contact-type 3D scanners. It scans data with hair-splitting precision, picking up even the most minute shape variations. Minimum scanning pitches for the MDX-15/20: X/Y-axis direction 0.05 to 5 mm (0.002 to 0.197 inches) settable in steps of 0.05 mm (0.002 inches), Z-axis direction 0.0025 mm (0.001 inches.)

    • Scans Almost Anything

      Scanning

The MDX-15/20 scans a wide range of objects including soft objects like clay and fruit that conventional contact scanners find very difficult. It can even scan glass, impossible using optical scanners because the light beams passes through the object without detecting it.

    • Software

SoftwareMODELA CAM software accepts IGES, DXF and STL files exported from the most popular industrial 3D CAD software programs. It can generate proportional 3D scaling, identify milling direction and automatically generate and display the tool path. The CAM software allows you to design in a variety of popular 3D CAD and computer graphics software programs, including SolidWorks, Rhinoceros, VectorWorks, LightWave and 3D studio max. It is also compatible with Windows® 95/98/ME/2000/NT4.0/XP.

Dr. PICZA scanning software features a dynamic graphic display and diverse editing functions. It offers numerous editing functions, including a handy convex/concave inversion function for making molds, a mirror function for creating symmetric data, a tilt adjustment function, curve smoothing, and a function for adjusting the height of surfaces. The scanning software can preview the image from any angle using a wide frame. It also displays color and texture renderings. PICZA scanned data can be stored in its original format, or exported in DXF, IGES, VRML, or as Point Cloud data (ASCII).

    • Easy As Pie

Easy to useWith an RS-232C cable, the MDX-15/20 plugs into a computer as easily as any desktop printer. Within minutes, even beginners can be scanning and milling.
